Sixteen-year-old Luke was trapped in Chicago when the lights went out and civilization began to unravel. Determined to get home to his family, Luke begins a 1,000-mile odyssey that will show him the depths of human depravity while also giving him a chance at redemption. In an abandoned house in Missouri, Luke makes a discovery that changes the way he acts and feels, as the suffering of another forces him to fight yet again. Luke is already haunted by what he has seen, and he fears what is yet to come as he takes on a partner in his travels. This is not a romance tale or a zombie story or a book about the end of the world. The world will still be here after civilization falls. This is a story about a boy who becomes a man in the most trying of times, and this story is filled with the violence of those lawless times.

Moves along at a great place. Pretty grimly realistic in places, rated r for violence that fits the subject, not gratuitous. Some decent values in here too. And a surprising amount of survival info worked into the story, not an equipment list. Maybe I'm around guns more than most but I didn't notice any great amount of weapons babble, it also fits the storyline. Protagonist is young but this is handled deftly, not some Rambo junior fantasy. Breaks the usual prepper mold in regard to women too. They're real not window dressing. I will keep reading the series, got my money's worth. Btw the page count on the book I believe said 112 but I read rather quickly and this took up my evening, it's a hefty story not a serial short.Product details

Walking in the Rain Surviving the Fall (Audible Audio Edition) William Allen Pat Young Audible Studios Books Reviews
Good book but too short. Really just opening chapters of a book. In spite of this I really enjoyed the story and the characters. Did not like that the author starts the story two months after the SHTF and the book has no real ending since it is really only part of a book. It is also a little far fetched how mature and experienced the main character is at sixteen years old. Getting really tired of serialized books. Seems that is really the trend in this genre now and I have quit purchasing any books I think are really just part of a book. Also tired of ebooks where the author writes a short book and then plays games to make it appear longer to the reader (like adding extra spacing which I really hate, adding a short story at the end, or like this author adding the first two chapters of the next book).Would have given this author a five if this had been a complete book. Purchased the first three in this series all at once, will enjoy reading them, but if the others are as short as this one I will not buy another book from this author.
Wonderful 3 book series and I have read more than 700 TEOTWAWKI books. The characters are developed, the scenarios reflect what could really happen in a grid down America - sad to say! Reality and a wonderful 16 year old exceptional "kid" who is wise beyond his years and so very, very capable. The philosophy of taking out those who use hunger to become depraved is spot on! Give NO quarter - take them out! NO politically correct crap and they get exactly what they deserve. Yet there are good people who though hungry and struggling try and help others. It is the Ying and Yang of the human mind. The plot and sub plots grabbed my interest from the first. This IS a gifted author and I feel a kindred spirit. BUY HIS BOOIKS - you will not be disappointed. Those who love the Bob Lee Swagger, Jack Reacher, Mitch Rapp heroes will love Luke and Amy his young lady love. I would have loved to have a son just like Luke! John Wayne, General Patton and HELL ON WHEELS all rolled into one young man!
The other reviewers have said it all, very elegantly.
I've been wet in dangerous situations, soaked to the bone. Mister Allen, through his excellent story telling brought me back to those times.
Again let me say, enjoyable, excellent work, compelling to read. The characters are well developed. The action scenes well told and believable. The timing of the backstory prods a reader to want more. I see by your ranking other readers do to. I want more.

This is the story of Luke as he tries to make his way home after some kind of EMP event. When the character is first introduced, he seems to be a man in his mid-30's. It turns out he is sixteen, but has had survival training from his father, who was in the armed services. He was in Chicago when the power went out and is trying to get to Texas.
Luke meets up with some good people and some bad people on his trip. He meets Amy, a fourteen-year-old girl and potential love interest. They save the life of a family and spend the rest of the book trying to get to the family's farm.
Luke is very intelligent and very well-prepared for this world, but every now and then he hears a "vocabulary" word that makes him think about his SAT's and you are jarred back into his harsh, new world.
The only issue I have with the book is that the author felt it necessary to list seemingly every type of gun ever manufactured, along with the ammunition each one takes (slight exaggeration). I don't know why this was necessary. I didn't care what type of guns they were, and I completely skipped those parts. This was a fairly short story, so skipping all the parts with the excessive gun descriptions amounted to a fair percentage of the book. I understand the author was trying to make the story authentic--and he absolutely did so in many ways--but for me, all the gun descriptions were just boring.
I would have given this story five stars if it hadn't been for the gun stuff. It is realistic, but still leaves room for some hope, even at the end of the world. At this point, there are still good people left in the world, but as the story gets further away from the actual event that happened, that will probably change as people get more desperate.
I recommend this series. It's very good, but I don't need to know if a gun is made in the US or Romania or Russia and the caliber of ammunition for each one. Tell me it's a shotgun or rifle or handgun or some military-grade weapon and that's good enough for me.
